Man Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting A Dog
A Sacramento man was sentenced to 10 years in a state prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a dog. Robert Edward De Shields was on parole and renting space in a Sacramento home until a jury convicted him of strangulation and sexual assault of a chihuahua last month. De Shields, who is confined to a wheelchair, was reportedly under the influence of the drug methamphetamine when he assaulted the dog of the Sacramento couple whose home he lived in. The couple reportedly came home one day last March to find De Shields holding the scared chihuahua. The next day, the eight-month-old dog went missing and was found in the garage with De Shields. Since the dog was reportedly in pain and shock, the couple took it to a veterinarian for examination. The dog was reported to have severe injuries to internal organs and its rectum. While this initially seemed like an animal cruelty case, the sexual nature of some of th dog's injuries have caused De Shields to be convicted of sexual assault as well. As a result, De Shields will now have to register as a sex offender for life and must serve his sentence in a state prison rather than a county jail. De Shields has served several prison or jail sentences since 1992.
