Family of Sex Abuse Victim Sues Boy Scouts of America
The family of a sex abuse victim is suing the Boy Scouts of America several years after their son was abused by a former troop leader in 2007. According to the victim's mother, when she first approached the Boy Scouts organization to report the abuse, they claimed they conducted an internal investigation and would not need to contact local law enforcement agents over the matter. The victim's mother called the local sheriff herself, prompting an investigation of troop leader Al Steven Stein, who was 29 years old at the time. Stein pleaded no contest to felony child endangerment after being charged with abusing three different boys. Stein was placed on probation at the time, then went to prison after authorities found several pictures of nude children on his cell phone's memory card. The suit against the Boy Scouts is now seeking unspecified damages as well as the release of of thousands of confidential files from the Scouts detailing allegations of sexual abuse by scores of Scout leaders all around the country. The suit intends to prove a "culture of hidden sexual abuse" within the organization as well as a complete lack of warning for the parents of boys who participated in its activities.
